The Fencing Season and Beyond

Even though the fencing season may be over for the 2017-2018 school year, OBHS students still have the opportunity to participate in a sport that has a point (get it?!). On Friday nights from 7-9 pm at Vernon, Mr. Bruckner hosts open gym fencing. Any student in grades 8-12 is allowed to participate.
In order to get started, students are required to have a parent or guardian sign a permission slip and return it to the athletic office.

Varsity fencing athlete Jillian Haguisan enjoys open gym fencing and regularly attends. When asked for her opinion on why more Oyster Bay athletes, and even non-athletes, should attend open gym fencing, she responded, “It's very fun! Open gym fencing is stress free and you can just hang out with your friends without worrying about your skill level.”        According to Jillian, about 10 to 25 participants attend every week.
Muskan Kumar, a varsity fencer, has not yet attended an open gym fencing night. Although Muskan has an activity that conflicts with open gym fencing, she says, “I would really like to attend one night in the near future! It seems like a lot of fun!”
The best part about open gym fencing is that it is free! Once a student hands in a permission slip to the front desk of the athletic office, that student is allowed to attend as frequently as he or she chooses. Open gym fencing night even supplies fencing equipment for all students.

Everyone is welcome to join, even if a student has NEVER fenced before in his or her life! So, if you want to try something new on a Friday night, consider open gym fencing!
