The Oyster Bay Varsity Volleyball team played East Rockaway High School on March 18th. This was the Baymen’s first time seeing the Rock since counties last year, where they took the win in a tight game. The Baymen had been working hard for weeks at practice in order to bring home the win.
Oyster Bay won the game 3-1 in four total sets. Although a close match, the Baymen pulled through with their energy and determination.
In the first set of the game, the Rocks led 25-23. Kaitlyn Aasheim, a junior player, says, “We played a good game, but we need to work on coming out stronger and with more energy. The beginning of the game just seemed slow for us.”
The second set the Baymen led 25-20 with a good kick towards the end from the Rocks. To finish off the game in the third set, the Baymen led 25-15. Oyster Bay won the fourth set 25-23.
The Baymen served 15 aces, 7 of which were scored by Kathrine Janette, a crucial component of their win. Besides aces, the Baymen also had 24 kills, all assisted by Senior Maia DiFiglia, and 28 digs, leading them to the win.
Looking at the overall game, Kaitlyn Aasheim says, “I think we did a good job communicating and keeping up our energy.”
After their win, the Baymen’s record stands 2-0, and the Rocks 1-1. For the Baymen, though, this is just the start of the season, and they can't wait to see what else lies ahead. Next Tuesday, the girls face off against Seaford, where they hope to bring home another win.
