Ms. Manson has been playing lacrosse since she was 16 years old. In addition to playing as an attacker for Plainedge High School, Ms. Manson also played at SUNY Brockport. Before arriving at OBHS, she coached at Great Neck for five years and at Whitman for two. Ms. Manson is currently a physical education professor at Adelphi University, where she taught Mr. Charlie Rizzuto, the current OBHS Girls Varsity Lacrosse Coach.
Ms. Manson enjoys working with the girls here at Oyster Bay. “[The team’s] hard-working,” she stated. “I love the girls. They’re all unique. Everybody’s nice, and they get along really well. We don’t fool around, but we do have fun when we practice.”
Though winning is an obvious goal for Ms. Manson, she also hopes to improve the team’s spirit as a whole.
Ms. Manson is not the only new coach to arrive at OBHS. After coaching for 10 years, Ms. Hordy has earned a spot as Assistant Varsity Coach. Ms. Hordy has been playing lacrosse since she was 11 years old, having learned the sport from her mother. She was a lacrosse goalkeeper for her high school team, club team, and Empire team. Ms. Hordy was a two-time County Championship and Long Island Championship player, and she even coached at a county-final game, where her team placed 2nd.
Ms. Hordy attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in Exercise and Sport Science. When she’s not assistant coaching at OBHS, she teaches physical education at Locust Valley Elementary School.
This season Ms. Hordy hopes to get the team to compete in a county game, as well as win a championship. “I hope my skill set will help the players on the team… [Lacrosse] is a fast-paced and growing game. Rules change and kids get stronger, so there’s always something new. It keeps you on your toes—as both a player and a coach,” she explains.
Though the spring season has just started, both Ms. Manson and Ms. Hordy have shown their skills and dedication to lacrosse. May both coaches and their teams have a successful and fun season!
