Coffee shops have become the trendiest spots to sit, hang, and enjoy a cup of joe. Although these cafes may be the perfect places to snap aesthetic pictures, is the coffee actually worth the visit? Oyster Bay’s newest coffee shop, Southdown Coffee, opened up a few years ago, bringing a young, hip feel to the town of Oyster Bay. But is this newer hot spot worth a trip?
First, let's talk about decor. Southdown Coffee sits in the center of town, right off of Main Street, a perfect location. On both sides of the door, huge windows serve to entice potential customers. The seating is adequate, considering how small the shop is, but no more than about eight people can comfortably sit without reaching full capacity.
When you first walk in, there is a wooden booth for seating and a refrigerator holding juices, yogurts and waters. In the back, there is the kitchen and cash register area that has a beautiful green and white tile display. Then, on the other side, there is some additional seating and a small shelf for sugar, milk, etc.
The whole space is filled with pictures, plants, and old-fashioned coffee machines. Even their menu is stickered right on the walk in a beautiful, black font. All in all, entering Southdown Coffee is similar to entering a trendy coffee shop in the Hamptons.
Southdown’s menu has plenty of coffee options, including drip, iced, espresso, latte, americano, mocha, cappuccino, and more! The latte I purchased was rich and tasty. It had a subtle sweetness to it and was made to perfection.
I was skeptical about ordering food from a coffee shop and expected my pesto avocado grilled cheese to be sub-par. Yet, when I took my first bite, I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was a delicious sandwich that melted in my mouth.
The price for coffee ranges from $2.75-$7 dollars, and the food options cost no more than $12. These are standard prices and won’t make a dent in your bank account.
I give this coffee shop five stars; it has great food, perfect coffee, and, overall, it was a wonderful experience. Southdown Coffee is a superb place that I recommend to everyone in Oyster Bay and beyond.
