Las Vegas: Over 50 Dead, Over 500 Injured

10/4/2017

As of now, the death toll is as high as 59 while at least 500 people are injured. Although police were able to locate the shooter swiftly, Paddock committed suicide before police entry. In his room, Paddock had a total of 23 weapons, which consisted of a combination of rifles and handguns. However, authorities discovered 19 more in his home in Mesquite, Nevada.
Paddock’s motive remains unclear with no prior criminal history, and no illegal purchases of firearms recorded. So far, there is no connection between any international terrorist organization and Paddock. However, Paddock did buy a semi-automatic weapon.
Chris Michel, the owner of Dixie Gunworx, a gun store where the shooter purchased a semi-automatic weapon, stated that Paddock’s purchase of one of his semi-automatic weapons was “legal in every way” and that he is now working with law enforcement. While it is illegal for stores to sell fully automatic weapons, it is not illegal to sell semi-automatic weapons. Officials have commented on the relative easiness of converting a semi-automatic into a fully automatic, which they suspect Paddock did.
President Trump released a solemn and subdued statement on the Las Vegas shootings, calling them “an act of pure evil.” During his speech, President Trump acknowledged the efforts of local law enforcement and called for unity amongst Americans in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
While the motives of the shooter may not be obvious now, it doesn’t change the fact this night was a tragedy. With hundreds of people injured and over 50 dead, the pain the victims’ families are going through is unimaginable. Oyster Bay High School sends their heartfelt condolences to the victims and those affected by this tragedy.
