By Lena Gluck

On November 31, the Emerging Leaders Business Competition was held at St. Josephs College. Twelve high schools from all over Long Island competed in a variety of categories. This year OBHS had many participants lead by business teacher Ms. Beal. Winners included Nicole Ojeda for “Job Interview 11th and 12th,” Chris Colvin and Sahill Yadav for “Entrepreneurship,” and Marc Iacono and Brian Casey for “Job Interview 9th and 10th.”
Students who choose to compete in the annual competition have a variety of categories from which to choose. This year’s categories included: Job Interview 9th and 10th, Job Interview 11th and 12th, Job Interview Life Skills, Travel and Tourism, Entrepreneurship, Retail Marketing, Human Recourses, Graphic Design, Hospitality Services, Sports Management, Entertainment Marketing, Public Relations, and Not-for-Profit Fundraising.
Katherine Usaquen, a junior at OBHS, competed at the competition for the first time. She shared, “It was a new experience that opened my eyes to different career options.”
Preparation differs for each category that students choose to enter. For example, if one were to participate in the job interview section, then he or she must create a resume as part of the preparation process. However, for a category such as entrepreneurship, students create a presentation about their “business,” while utilizing a tri fold board; on competition day, they must present their company to either two or three judges. Every category of the competition requires hard work and dedication from the competitors in order to be successful.
OBHS has been participating in this competition for eight years, and we have continued to be successful. Thank you to Ms. Beal for her continuous guidance and for her willingness to assist students with their business projects.
Great job to all of our participants and congratulations to all of our winners!
