Dr. Francesco Ianni, the new Superintendent of Schools here at OBEN, has been a recognizable face around campus ever since he took over for his predecessor, Dr. Seinfeld, in January. Recently, Dr. Ianni sat down with The Harbour Voice to share more about his life and his role as Superintendent.
Dr. Ianni comes from a small town in Italy, but he made his way toward the bright lights of Manhattan when he was just 22 years old. He started working in a pizzeria and going to school at night to learn English.
Though Dr. Ianni was originally enrolled in law school, he loved math and always enjoyed tutoring his family members. So, he decided to pursue something he was passionate about: a career in education.
“At the end of the day, you have to do what you believe, what you love,” Dr. Ianni says.
Dr. Ianni says that he’s impressed with the students and staff here at OBHS. He appreciates the “determination, maturity, and politeness” of the students, and he acknowledges the dedication of all the teachers and administrators.
As for his goals for the year, Dr. Ianni says he wants to “be visible, be around, and show that there is positivity in everything.”
Additionally, he intends to “empower students to achieve excellence and create an environment where everyone can be successful.”
The new Superintendent of Schools is also working with Ms. Lasher and the high school administrative team to ensure that seniors have a great year, which includes having a graduation and prom.
As for his life outside of work, Dr. Ianni has completed seven marathons and competed in multiple Ironman triathlons; he loves biking and swimming. He also enjoys watching football, as the plays resemble mathematics.
If Dr. Ianni could have any job outside of the education field, he would be a pilot, and he has even taken flying lessons before!
Dr. Ianni says he has learned that “it's important as an educational leader that people see the positivity. Even if it's a bad day, look at ways to find a positive in every situation.”
The OBHS students and staff thank Dr. Ianni for his constant optimism, despite the challenges of this year, and we look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes at OBEN in the years to come.
