This Spring, Oyster Bay welcomed a new math supervisor, Mr. Bixhorn, to the district. Mr. Bixhorn looks forward to his time at OBHS and is excited to get to know all of the students and staff.

Prior to joining the OBEN school district, Mr. Bixhorn was
a math specialist and 6th grade math teacher in the East Rockaway School District, and most recently a middle school Assistant Principal in Deer Park. He shared that compared to other schools he has worked at, he likes that “Oyster Bay is a smaller school district, and the staff knows their students well.” Mr. Bixhorn adds, “The staff also seems to truly care about their community, as they have been volunteering their time to provide food to families in need.”

Mr. Bixhorn explains that math was always his favorite school subject, and his mom was a high school math teacher. One reason why he chose to teach math was because he wants to be able to answer the question: why are we learning this? A question he used to wonder when he was a student.

However, Mr. Bixhorn did not always know he wanted to become a teacher. Originally, he looked for a career related to golf due to his experience working as a golf camp counselor for several summers in college. “It was great to see the campers improve their golf skills. It was when I learned how important and powerful a career in teaching can be.”

In his free time, Mr. Bixhorn loves to watch and play sports, specifically basketball, football, and, of course, golf. He adds that he is a Knicks and Jets fan. He also enjoys going to the beach and traveling with his wife.

Despite his love of sports, if Mr Bixhorn could have any other job, it would be a food critic: “A job where I could try new food, share my opinion, and get paid sounds too good to be true.” If he could teach any other class at OBHS, it would be a “personal finance elective class.” Mr. Bixhorn explains that “having a strong understanding of managing personal finance will help all students be more successful throughout their career.”

Looking towards the upcoming year, Mr. Bixhorn is eager to finally meet all of the students and staff in person, and he shares his goals for the fall: “One of my goals for the upcoming year is to learn more about how we are using technology to help students learn math. I also want to look for new ways to make math more fun and relevant, and I want to ensure students are provided with the support they need to be successful in math.”

Mr. Bixhorn is enjoying his time in our district so far, and we are excited to welcome him as the new math supervisor!
