Be The Change club, advised by Mr. Andriaccio (Mr. A) and Mr. Brown, is a club that reaches out to students of all ages; its goal is to raise money and awareness to help the less fortunate in unique and cool ways that benefit both the students and the community.
The head student officers for Be The Change are Maria McKevitt, President, and Taylor Hill, Vice President. These two girls, along with Mr. A and Mr. Brown, set the stage both in kindness and community service.
Maria McKevitt, President of the club and a seventh grader at OBHS, said that she believes “that the goal of Be The Change is to raise money to help the less fortunate in creative and fun ways that help our community.” And this is exactly what the club is doing.
Be The Change raises money in ways that involve both students and teachers. So far they’ve sold Vendetta CD’s (Mr. A’s former band), mustaches, and turkeys for Thanksgiving. In October they even conducted a candy drive for the soldiers.
Right before the holidays this fantastic club made every teacher's day with a note from a student that complimented the teacher and all he or she does for the student and our school community.
This year Be The Change is raising money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, which is a hospital and research center for children with cancer. St. Jude's never sends a bill to the parents or guardians for any of the treatments done for these children. The club is also raising money for The North Shore Animal League and Make a Wish Foundation.
Be The Change is also offering opportunities for those who are willing to donate by selling the white board and the special table, as well as choosing the song of the day.
In the future, there will also be a trip to Laser Land that is open to all seventh and eighth graders and their relatives. All of the money made from the submissions for the Laser Land party will be donated to the multiple charities that Be The Change supports.
The Be The Change club is truly an amazing organization here in our school. You can join this club regardless of your age or grade level because anyone can make a difference. Personally, as a member of this club, there are no better people with whom to work, and I highly recommend taking part in such a unique opportunity to make a change in our school community. Please speak to either Mr. A or Mr. Brown if you are interested in taking part in this fulfilling, charitable club!
