Do OBHS Students Agree with the Teen Choice Awards?

The Teen Choice Awards, also known as the TCAs, is an award show created for teenage pop culture. First airing on the FOX network in 1999, the TCAs were instantly successful. The key to this success was the handful of celebrity guests who attended and made appearances on the awards show stage.

This year, the Teen Choice Awards results were surprising to us, so we decided to hold our own Teen Choice Awards here at OBHS.  In order to allow students to cast their votes, a Google form was sent out to all grade levels through the Remind app. Although a majority of the school received the survey, only 72 students responded. The survey was anonymous; therefore, the responses could have been from students in any grade.

The survey contained eleven popular categories, all focusing on different aspects of pop culture. Although the actual award show has 77 categories, we chose a handful of the most popular. The categories included Choice Comedy and Drama Movie, Choice R&B/ Hip Hop Artist, Choice Male and Female Artist, Choice Male and Female Song, Choice Drama and Throwback TV Shows, Choice YouTuber, and Choice Style Icon.
Many of the nominees were aimed toward a younger audience, or were not age appropriate to the category. So, the “None of the Above” option was added to the survey as an easy way to express dissatisfaction with the nominees. Although the “None of the Above” option won on our poll for Male Artist, Shawn Mendes came in a close second, which was no surprise.

Although many results were predictable, some still managed to surprise us. The Choice Youtuber nominees were among the most surprising. The Dolan Twins won in our survey, but Liza Koshy was the winner for the real TCAs. Since The Dolan Twins won by a large margin in our poll, with “None of the Above” as the runner up, it was shocking that Liza Koshy snagged the TCA.

The Choice Male Artist category yielded another surprising result. At the TCAs, Louis Tomlinson won despite barely releasing any new music recently. Whereas, nominees such as Shawn Mendes and Drake have recently released music.

Overall, the “None of the Above” option dominated our makeshift TCA, resulting as the top choice numerous times, and tailing along as a close second or third in multiple categories. The results were mixed, but overall, the real TCA winners did not reflect the scattered opinions of teens here at OBHS.
