By Joan Olivero

Summer is just around the corner, ready to be filled with fun and enjoyment. There are many summer “hot spots” and activities spread throughout Long Island and New York City, so why not take advantage of them? Each of these experiences are unique and exciting. Here are the Top 5 places to check out this summer.

1.Cooper Beach
Cooper Beach, in South Hampton, has been ranked among the top 10 beaches in America. Facing right out to the Atlantic Ocean, Cooper Beach’s white sand and scenic backdrop attract many beach-goers. With a cost of $40 upon entrance, a day spent at this Hampton beach is one for the record books. The beach provides chair and umbrella rentals, spectacular meals (mainly seafood), and a gorgeous sunset as the day comes to an end.

2.Splish Splash
An article about things to do during the summer on Long Island could not have been written without talking about Splish Splash. With 25 attractions, including 15 water slides, 4 child-centered areas, and a super cool bird show, Splish Splash is an Island staple for the summer. “Long Island’s best family waterpark” is in Riverhead right off exit 72. A day of fun at the waterpark costs approximately $50 a person, but patrons receive a discount if they go with a group of 20 people or more. Splish Splash is a fun way to cool off during the hot summer.

3.Pier 17
Pier 17, opened last July, is the place to go for everything. This new waterfront space contains a market place, a movie and exercise area, an outlook deck to the Upper New York Bay, and a rooftop concert venue. Located in the Seaport District of  NYC, Pier’s purpose is to lure New Yorkers to the water without feeling too touristy. Artists and comedy acts such as Billie Eilish, 21 Savage, Blackbear, and the Lonely Island are lined up to perform this summer at the Pier 17 venue, which is sure to be a blast.

4.The NYC High Line
The NYC High Line is my personal favorite on this list. The elevated freight line turned park is one of a kind. The 1.5 mile stretch of the High Line is scattered with art exhibits, stands, performances, food, and a unique view. Spanning the lower west side of Manhattan, the High Line is easily accessible from below, with a stairwell up to the abandoned train line every few blocks. The best part? There is no entry fee. Walking through the High Line is the perfect NYC experience, combining industrial and noisy with serenity and beauty.

5.The Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusion, located on 8th Avenue in NYC, is the perfect idea for a rainy summer day. The building, which opened in late September 2018, has already attracted thousands with its exciting twist on science. The MOI explores the art of illusions and how our brain processes them. Each attraction is hands-on, colorful and seemingly unreal, creating a new level of enthusiasm from customers while still being educational. From basic photo and optical illusions to anti-gravity and rotating rooms, the MOI has it all. Depending on your age, the prices range anywhere from $15-20.

These five attractions surrounding our area are the perfect go-to for any type of summer day. When planning your next day out, make sure to check out these activities. You’re sure to have a blast!
