Top 5 Romantic Movies

By Joan Olivero

Romantic films are arguably one of the best genres in the film community. The balance between the dramatic and romantic challenges makes these movies truly one of a kind. There are a myriad of quality romantic films out in the world, but here are the top 5 for the perfect movie night.

The Fault in Our Stars
From best-selling novel to award winning movie, The Fault in Our Stars is the perfect young adult romantic film. The heartbreaking, romantic love story is so full of emotion and tear-jerking moments, viewers must be prepared with a box of Kleenex. Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenager living her life with metastatic thyroid cancer, meets Augustus Waters, a fellow
cancer patient now in remission. Hazel falls for Augustus, or “Gus,” as do we. The two try to create memories worth a lifetime in their small window of time together until tragedy hits the young couple. The Fault in Our Stars gives watchers emotions only a true love story could.

The Notebook
The 2004 dramatic romance, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, shows that true love stands the test of time. The movie is split between two settings, one modern day, the other 1940 South Carolina. Young Noah Calhoun, a poor worker from Seabrook Island, South Carolina, spots a beautiful Allie Hamilton, a 17-year-old heiress, and feelings begin to fly. But in typical dramatic fashion, not everyone approves of their relationship. Allie’s mother bans Noah from seeing her daughter because of his social status. Years pass and soon enough, Noah and Allie find their way back to one another. A shocking twist at the end of the film brings the story full-circle, giving the watcher an understanding of why the two seemingly contradicting plots coincide with one another. Most couples could only wish for Noah and Allie’s love, which is why The Notebook is the perfect film to watch with your special someone.

Titanic
Of course Titanic must be on this list; it is arguably the most famous love story in history. While everyone and their mothers know the basic plot of Titanic, the deeper affection and love a first-class passenger and a penniless artist have is truly something different and unexpected. The tragedy and heartbreak from the events of the film is countered by Jack and Rose’s love for one another. While the devastation in the film physically separates the two, Rose continues to fulfill Jack’s wishes as a symbol of her everlasting love.

Love Actually
Love Actually is the ultimate romantic comedy. The 2003 film dives into the lives of 28 characters, in 10 different life circumstances. Each part of the movie seems so unlike another, but in the end of the movie, viewers get to see just how intertwined all their lives are. While Love Actually is set around the Christmas holiday, the message that Richard Curtis, the director, tried to send was that love actually is all around. Love can enter our lives at the most unusual times, in the most unique relationships. The comedic aspect of the film is great for any couple or any loving relationship. While it contains some mature content and I do not recommend it for any audience under the age of 13, it is the funniest, yet inspiring, movie I have seen in quite a while.

La La Land
The last film that is a great option to watch with your significant other is La La Land. While the story does have tense scenes, the plot is a timeless work of love and sacrifice. Aspiring actress Mia Dolan and struggling jazz pianist Sebastian Wilder cross paths quite a few times, but it is not until Seb arrives at Mia’s job that they really begin to understand and learn more about each other. The couple fall in love, but complications due to their work divide them. Mia returns home to Boulder City, Nevada, where Seb chases after her to help her gain a film audition. The early 2017 release was a hit with many critics, as the film and the actors involved won a total of 41 awards!
