The Operator is an autobiography written by Robert O’Neill, the ex U.S. Navy SEAL who is famous for firing the shots that killed the most wanted terrorist in the world: Osama Bin Laden.
The book details O’Neill’s impulsive decision of enlisting in the Navy with dreams of becoming a SEAL, the rigorous training he underwent to become one, and the missions he completed as a SEAL. Some of the stories in this book detail his perspective during the Somali pirate kidnapping of Captain Richard Phillips; Operation Red Wings, which inspired the movie Lone Survivor; and, of course, the raid on Osama Bin Laden.
The book hooks the reader within the first few pages, explaining how O’Neill ended up pursuing a military career and weaving comedic elements into the story.  O’Neill utilizes many descriptive details that intrigue the reader throughout the narrative, especially during chapters that are solely about combat experiences, describing all the sights and sounds in the setting.
Robert J O’Neill is an ex-Navy SEAL, one of the United States’ most elite special forces under command of the Navy. SEAL stands for Sea Air and Land, as soldiers within this unit are trained for unconventional warfare. Born and raised in Butte, Montana, O’Neill joined the Navy at nineteen with dreams of becoming a member of one of the most elite units. Throughout his impressive career, O’Neill was decorated fifty-two times, receiving bronze stars with valor, silver stars, and many other awards and commendations. He is now a public speaker who applies his military experience to current politics as an advisor on Fox News.
“The Operator” is an action-packed autobiography that offers real experiences of a U.S. Navy SEAL, written by a real SEAL. O’Neill leaves out no details when describing the nature of combat he faces in a modern setting, and he exposes the reader to the lifestyle of a member of the U.S. Special Forces.
