The iPhone X is supposed to be Apple’s best phone yet, but is buying the device really worth it? The iphone X was released on November 3rd, 2017, but the phone was available for presale on October 27th. Presales rocketed just minutes after the release of the phone. The new iPhone contains more features and the most advanced technology, making it more efficient than previous Apple phones.
The iPhone X introduces new technology, including facial recognition software so that users don’t have to unlock their phones with passcodes. The glass on the back is water resistant, and the phone contains a more advanced camera.

Facial recognition works by scanning an owner’s face multiple times when the phone is first set up; it detects features such as eye and nose positions. The phone then stores that information and uses it to unlock the phone.
The iPhone X is appealing to many because of its 5.8-inch glass screen. Instead of having a black or white border like the older phones do, this one has a full glass screen, except for a small portion of silver at the top, which is a part of the front camera.
Apple customers also tend to lean towards the iPhone X instead of the iPhone 8 Plus because of the quality of the camera. Yet, in reality, the iPhone X has the exact same camera and video as the iPhone 8 Plus.
The iPhone X also charges quicker than other models, and the battery is able to last longer. The traditional iPhone charges one percent per minute, but the X is able to charge fifty percent in only thirty minutes. The downside to the expedited charging is the cost. The new charger costs $25 more than a normal charging cable. Wireless charging is also available for the iPhone X, and the battery life is two hours longer than the iPhone 7.
The iPhone 8 Plus may be the better option due to the drastic price difference. The 8 Plus is $200 cheaper than the X. Both devices have the same photo and video quality. The X has fewer color options and requires a learning curve. The iPhone X only comes in silver and space grey. The 8 Plus comes in silver, space grey and gold. The X has innovative features that may take a while to get used to. The X does not have a home button, and in order to get to the home screen, the user needs to swipe up; the 8 Plus has the traditional home button, so it is not hard to get used to.
Ninth grader Matthew Wong has the iPhone X. He shared, “I think it is worth it because it is really fast and really cool. I like the facial recognition feature. The only downside to it is some of the apps are not fit to the screen yet, so they are cut off. I personally think students should wait for the next model to come out.”
Overall, the iPhone X has pretty good reviews; it has 4.7/5 stars on Apple’s website. However, OBHS students should weigh the pros and cons before deciding to splurge on Apple’s latest gadget.
