Get your popcorn ready because the 90th Ceremony of the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) is airing on Sunday, March 4th, at the Grand Ballroom of the Hollywood and Highland Center.
For all you teenagers who have always wanted to stay up late to watch the ceremony, now you can! This year’s show will no longer begin at 9:00 pm, but at 8:00 pm instead.
This year, the Academy Awards announced that the ceremony will be hosted again by Jimmy Kimmel. Fun fact: Jimmy Kimmel is only the second entertainer to return to his Oscar hosting duties two years in a row. Many viewers are looking forward to political jests and celebrity antics. The nominations for each category were announced on January 23rd, and the following are my predictions for future winners.

Best Actress in a Leading Role nominations include Frances McDormand from the acclaimed film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Sally Hawkins from The Shape of Water; Meryl Streep from The Post; Margot Robbie from I, Tonya; and Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird. Although all of these actresses delivered powerful performances, Frances McDormand leads the competition with her performance as a grieving mother, experiencing frustration with the incompetence of the ongoing investigation regarding her daughter’s rape and murder.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominations include Allison Janney from I, Tonya; Laurie Metcalf from Lady Bird; Octavia Spencer from The Shape of Water; Mary J. Blige from Mudbound; and Lesley Manville from Phantom Thread. Allison Janney is set to take home the Oscar statue, having played figure skater Tonya Harding’s mother. Recently, Janney won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role. During her acceptance speech, she stated, “What this movie did is tell a story about class in America, tell a story about the disenfranchised, tell a story about a woman who was not embraced for her individuality, tell a story about truth and the perception of truth in the media.”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role nominations include Denzel Washington from Roman J. Israel, Esq.; Daniel Day-Lewis from Phantom Thread; Gary Oldman from Darkest Hour; Timothée Chalamet from Call Me by Your Name; and Daniel Kaluuya from Get Out. This category radiates “Hollywood Royalty” with veteran actors such as Denzel Washington and Daniel Day-Lewis. In fact, this is perhaps Lewis’ last chance to add a fourth Oscar to his collection; he recently announced his retirement from the film industry. I anticipate Timothée Chalamet will be walking up to the stage for his performance as Elio Perlman, an adolescent who falls in love with one of his father’s student helpers, Oliver, during a summer vacation. Chalamet’s performance has been critically acclaimed, and his chemistry with fellow actor Armie Hammer, who portrayed his love interest, is undeniable.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role nominations include Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Willem Dafoe from The Florida Project; Richard Jenkins from The Shape of Water; and Christopher Plummer from All The Money In The World. I foresee Sam Rockwell winning the prestigious award after snatching this year’s Golden Globe under the same category. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received much praise during the Globes, especially for Rockwell’s performance.

Lastly, Best Picture nominations include Get Out; Lady Bird; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; The Post; and The Shape of Water. Get Out is the well-deserved winner. Its losses during the Golden Globes were shocking, and the cast, crew, and director should expect to be rewarded with Best Picture.
Tune in on March 4th at 8:00 pm (if you have time; if not, set your DVR) because this year’s ceremony will showcase appearances and performances by revered artists in the entertainment industry.
